Test prototypes of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class have been spotted repeatedly in recent months, but there has been no trace of the AMG C63 range-topper yet.
Until now, that is, because our photographers have spotted a 2022 Mercedes-AMG C63 prototype for the first time entering and exiting the carmaker’s Nürburgring Nordschleife test center.
How do we know it’s the C63 and not a regular C-Class? Well, despite the heavy camouflage, there are several elements that give it away. First and foremost, the prototype features a big ‘Panamericana’ grille that’s a staple of Mercedes-AMG models.

Then there are the visibly wider wheel arches front and rear, another sign of AMG-ness, so to speak. Other telling details include the many air intakes in the front camouflage, as well as the beefier brakes with big ventilated discs up front and generous calipers. Last but not least, this prototype sports quad exhausts typical of Mercedes-AMG models.
Other than the AMG-specific parts, expect the upcoming C63 to adopt the same S-Class-inspired design as the regular C-Class, including the exterior lights and MBUX 2.0-equipped interior. Mind you, this particular prototype features provisional lights at the back.
There’s one very important thing that we can’t identify for the moment and that’s the type of powertrain residing under the long hood. Rumor has it the next-generation C63 will leave the glorious 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 behind to cut back on emissions.
The real question is what will Mercedes-AMG replace the V8 with. As it turns out, it could be a twin-turbo straight-six or an even less brawny turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot from the A45 S and CLA45 S. Regardless of which of these engines will be chosen, plug-in hybrid assistance is a given, taking the total output beyond 500 horsepower. Another important update will reportedly be the addition of an optional 4Matic AWD system, a first for the C63.
The all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 is expected to debut in late 2021-early 2022, after the launch of the regular C-Class.
