A mysterious prototype of the 992-gen Porsche 911 was spotted undergoing testing at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, and the first word that comes to mind is ‘Safari’.

With a high ground clearance and what our photographers say was Styrofoam around the wheel arches, it is unlike anything we have seen from the Stuttgart company in many years, so what are we looking at?

In a perfect world, it would be a modern interpretation of the classic 911 Safaris. This would bring back the iconic moniker used in the ‘70s, when they left the World Rally Championship and made the 911 Safari. The model quickly became an icon and sparked high interest, which made some companies launch aftermarket conversions that turn the regular versions of the sports car into 911 Safaris.

However, there is absolutely no indication that Porsche is planning such a model, and from a financial standpoint, it would make little to no sense, considering the challenging year. As a result, we would be tempted to say that they might actually be testing a new suspension of some sorts, perhaps for a future derivative of the 911.

There is always the possibility that it is a simple idea that would eventually be shelved, but even so, it is nice to see a high-riding version of the 911 that doesn’t bear a tuner’s signature and, who knows, it may open the door for a hairy-chested crossover in the near future
