The VW Passat once driven by Tanner Foust in the Formula Drift championship is beloved by many racing fans and rightfully considered the most insane Passat on earth. The Hoonigan crew recently had the opportunity to check it out.
Like any good drift car, Foust’s Passat has very little in common with the street car on which it’s based. It was built by Papadakis Racing and is powered by a modified 7.3-liter LS7 V8 that delivers roughly 700 hp and is supplemented by a nitrous system which gives it an extra 200 hp.
Making this Passat all the more special is the fact that it has a custom 8-into-1 exhaust system that provides it with a high-pitched tone a regular LS7 V8 simply can’t match.

Even though Foust’s Passat was designed for drifting, Hoonigan wanted to see how it performs in a straight-line, so they brought along a modified MKIV Toyota Supra for a series of drag races. Thanks to a host of engine upgrades, it produces roughly 720 hp, but weighs roughly 800 lbs (362 kg) more than the VW Passat.
In the first of the two drag races held, the two launch off the launch at similar speeds, but the Passat is quickly and easily able to pull ahead. It’s a similar story in the second race, where the Supra had difficulty putting its power to the ground and just couldn’t keep up with the Passat.
