The first media drives for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series recently took place and CarWow was among those who got to test out the new flagship AMG.
Any vehicle from Mercedes that has the words ‘Black Series’ in its name has to be a serious performer, and that’s exactly what this new model is. Not only does it look even more extreme than lesser AMG GTs, but it is also more track focused.

Under the hood lies a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 with a flat-plane crank and larger turbos than other AMG GT variants, which churns out 720 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. In developing the car, the German automaker upgraded the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to ensure it can cope with the extra 143 hp and 74 lb-ft (100 Nm) over the GT R Pro. Power continues to be sent to the rear wheels and the company claims a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.2 seconds, a sprint to 124 mph (200 km/h) of under 9 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h).
It’s not only the upgraded engine and transmission that make the AMG GT Black Series special. Designers have also worked extensively on the car’s aerodynamics so it now produces over 882 lbs (400 kg) of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h) thanks, largely, to the towering rear wing.
The reviewer had the opportunity to not only drive the car on the track but also test out its straight-line performance. He was able to hit 60 mph in 3.13 seconds and recorded a quarter-mile time of 10.61 seconds; not bad considering the run wasn’t done on a prepped strip.
