This VW Golf may look like any other out there, but if you were to try and race it between the lights, you’d be in for a rude awakening.
Built by a team in Finland, this Golf looks completely standard from the outside, with the exception of the aftermarket wheels. Straight from the factory, it would have featured a four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels. It now has a V8 driving the rear ones.
The engine in question is BMW’s M60B40 that was used in the likes of the E34-generation 540i and the E32 and E38-generation 740i models. It has a capacity of 3,982 cc and, in stock form, puts out 282 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) – which, for a car like the Golf, is more than enough.

Elsewhere, this V8-powered hatchback has the differential and rear axle of an E39 5-Series, as well as the front axle of an E36-generation 3-Series. It also features a bespoke suspension with BC Racing custom push-rod coilovers fitted in the trunk. This setup means that the Golf isn’t just a weapon in a straight-line, but is also very tail-happy and can be expertly drifted around corners with very little fuss.
It’s unclear how much the Finnish racing team spent on this project, but whatever the sum, we’re sure it was worth every penny.
Speaking of fast VW Golfs, we will be driving the Mk7.5 Golf GTI TCR in a few weeks, so be sure to stay tuned for our review.
