Walmart Canada has revealed that it will triple the number of Tesla Semi trucks it has on order.

As part of a $3.5 billion investment from Walmart Canada over the next five years to grow its business, the company has confirmed it will reserve a total of 130 Tesla Semis. Walmart has a global target of achieving zero emissions by 2040 and using electric trucks will help it reach this goal.

“Tripling our reservation of Tesla Semi trucks is part of our ongoing effort to innovate the business and prioritize sustainability,” senior vice president for the logistics and supply chain of Walmart Canada, John Bayliss, said. “By converting 20 per cent of our fleet to electric vehicles by the end of 2022 and committing to alternative power for all fleet vehicles by 2028, we are putting safety, innovation and sustainability at the forefront of our logistics network.”

Tesla first unveiled the Semi in November 2017 with the intention of commencing customer deliveries in 2019. That date has since been pushed back to 2021 and it’s reasonable to assume the Truck has undergone some improvements over the past three years.

When first announced, the Tesla Semi had a claimed range of 500 miles (804 km) under highway conditions when towing an 80,000 lbs (36,287 kg) load. Tesla also claimed the truck could hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 20 seconds with a full 80,000 lbs load and climb 5 per cent grades at a steady 65 mph (104.6 km/h) compared to the 45 mph (72 km/h) of an equivalent diesel truck. Earlier this year, Elon Musk stated that the Semi now has a quoted range of 600 miles (965 km).
