2021 Toyota Mirai FCV Revealed, Features Rear-Wheel Drive And 180 HP

The 2021 Toyota Mirai wasn’t slated to be unveiled until December, but initial reviews are already coming in.

Noticed by Motor1, the videos provide a detailed look at the hydrogen-powered car and reveal a number of specifications.

Starting with the latter, the 2021 Mirai reportedly features three hydrogen storage tanks that allow for a range of 528 miles (850 km) in Japan. That’s an increase of approximately 30% and this is important as hydrogen refueling stations are few and far between.

Besides being able to travel farther than its predecessor, the car also features a more powerful electric motor that develops 180 hp (134 kW / 182 PS) and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque. This reportedly enables the car to hit a top speed of up to 109 mph (175 km/h).

Like the concept, the production Mirai is rear-wheel drive and reportedly rides on the same platform that underpins the Crown and Lexus LS. The model is also slated to have a 50:50 weight distribution which should make it more fun to drive.

While the company is staying tight-lipped, Toyota USA confirmed the model is coming in “late December in Hydro Blue, Oxygen White, Heavy Metal, Supersonic Red and Black!” They also released a handful of images showing the car will be available in XLE and Limited trims.

On the styling front, there isn’t much to report as the production model appears virtually identical to last year’s thinly veiled concept. That’s a good thing as the 2021 Mirai is far more attractive than its predecessor and looks like a proper luxury sedan rather than a mutated Prius.

The upscale design continues in the cabin and it too closely resembles the concept. As a result, it features a digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system. We can also see leather seats, gloss black trim and bronze accents. Other highlights include a digital rearview mirror, a panoramic sunroof and a roomier rear seat with climate controls on the armrest.
