A 4-second time from zero to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) was once considered supercar realm. Now we have hatchbacks, like the new Mercedes-AMG A45 S, that are even faster.
Rocketing the mega hatch king to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds, and up to a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h), is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It puts out 415 HP (421 PS / 310 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque, which are channeled to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The A45 S is a force to be reckoned with, but surely it stands no chance against the latest Audi RS6 Avant, right? After all, the super executive estate sits two classes above and rocks a twin turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 591 HP (600 PS / 441 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). From nought to 62 mph, it needs just 3.6 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h), or 190 mph (306 km/h) with the speed limiter removed. It also has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed auto ‘box.
On paper, despite being almost 1,000 lbs (~450 kg) heavier than the A45 S, the RS6 Avant seems to have the upper hand, but how does everything translate in a good old drag race from a standing start? That’s what we’re about to find out in the following video, which also shows two races from a 50 mph (80 km/h) rolling start, with both cars in their comfiest and sportiest settings respectively, as well as a brake test that rounds up the challenges.
