The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is an utter beast and one of the best bang-for-your buck (when sold without a dealer premium…) performance cars on sale in the U.S. But how does it compare to the current king of supercars, the McLaren 720S?

To find out, the owner of a white 720S and a Shelby GT500 recently headed out onto a highway in the States for a series of rolling drag races between the two. The YouTuber notes that the GT500 features a host of modifications, including a cold air intake, high-flow catalytic converters, and a tune. These upgrades mean it delivers 800 hp to the rear wheels, or approximately 100 hp more than the McLaren.

Before the races begin, the two are put on a set of scales to see how they compare. With a full tank of gas, the Mustang weighs in at 4,233 lbs (1,920 kg). By comparison, the 720S weighs approximately 3,280 lbs (1,487 kg), more than 900 lbs (408 kg) less than the Ford. That’s a huge difference.

Unsurprisingly, it is the McLaren that is able to comfortably beat the Ford in each of the three drag races held. Sure, the GT500 may have more power, but that apparently isn’t enough to overcome all that extra weight.
