The Porsche Taycan has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest drift with an electric vehicle.

The record was set at the Porsche Experience Center at the Hockenheimring where Porsche instructor Dennis Retera completed 210 laps of the 200-meter-long circular track. This took Retera roughly 54 minutes and saw him cover a total of 42.171 km (26.2 miles).

Porsche used the entry-level, rear-wheel drive Taycan that it sells exclusively in China for the test. While the result is impressive, the outright record for the longest drift is still held by the BMW M5 that covered 374.1 km (232.5 miles) in a continuous slide a few years ago.

“When the driving stability programs are switched off, a Powerslide with the electric Porsche is extremely easy, especially of course with this model variant that is driven exclusively by the rear wheels,” Retera said in a statement. “Sufficient performance is always available. The low center of gravity and the long wheelbase ensure stability. The precise design of the chassis and steering allows for confident control at all times, even when moving sideways. Nevertheless, it was also very exhausting for me to keep my concentration high for 210 laps, especially since the irrigated asphalt of the drift circle does not have the same grip everywhere.”

Top Gear’s Chris Harris was at the record-setting run and had his own attempt at the record. He managed to complete a total of 18 laps of the Taycan around the circular track which, prior to Retera’s 210 laps, was announced as an official Guinness World Record.
