The all-new BMW M3 Sedan has entered production this week at the company’s Munich plant where the entire G20 3 Series range is built.
The arrival of the new M3 completes the 3 Series lineup at the Munich plant, which makes the 3 Series Sedan and 3 Series Touring – including all plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel engines. Remarkably, all models and drive variants are made on the same line.
“We are very pleased to be producing the new BMW M3 at our parent plant going forward,” said BMW Group Plant Munich Director Robert Engelhorn. “It’s such an iconic car and has many fans among our team at the plant, me included. The integration of the M3 went absolutely smoothly. We benefitted from the vast experience gained with previous generations of BMW M vehicles,” he added.

The previous-generation BMW M4 was built in Munich until well into the spring; the new generation model has been moved to the Dingolfing plant. This has helped BMW to adopt the stand-alone assembly process for the CFRP roof of the M4 Coupe for the new M3.
BMW did have to introduce totally new manual workflows at the plant’s in-house seat production where the new M carbon bucket seats are made. In addition, the hood and side panels of the G80 M3 are also handcrafted and assembled manually.
The all-new BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe will arrive in European dealerships in March 2021. Both new BMW M models feature a high-revving, twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine available in two different states of tune. Base models get 473 hp (352 kW / 479 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque, while Competition variants offer 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.
A unique option in the segment is the six-speed manual transmission available for rear-wheel-drive models. Other options include an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the intelligent M xDrive all-wheel drive system (available from summer 2021).
