GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system with trailering capability will be made available to the facelifted 2022MY GMC Sierra 1500 Denali trucks sometime towards the end of next year. The updated Sierra was originally planned to be introduced for 2021, but was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to GM, Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance system and is currently available on more than 200,000 miles (322,000 km) of compatible roads in both the U.S. as well as Canada.
Super Cruise works by employing a driver attention system and precision LiDAR map data, to go with real-time cameras, various sensors and GPS.
There’s also a small camera on top of the steering column working alongside infrared lights to aid the driver attention system in determining where the driver is looking when Super Cruise is active. If the system detects that the driver is looking away from the road for too long, the steering wheel light bar will make itself seen in order to gain their attention.

GMC already rolled out a series of upgrades for the 2021 Sierra, such as Jack-Knife Alert, Trailer Length Indicator and the enhanced Rear Trailer View.
Active safety trailering features are obviously very important to truck buyers, and GM has taken notice. “More than half of our Sierra customers use their trucks to primarily tow equipment for outdoor adventures,” said GMC Marketing boss Rich Latek back in September, adding that his company continually listens to customer feedback.
The aforementioned three features are available on both the GMC Sierra light-duty as well as heavy-duty models.
