The new VW Golf R not only looks a little bit meaner than its predecessor, but it also includes a new drift mode that promises to add some extra excitement to the driving experience.
Eager to see what it is like to drive the new hot hatch in drift mode, YouTuber Automann.tv found some quiet country roads and put the car to the test.
Much like the Ford Focus RS that popularized the use of drift modes in modern-day performance cars, the Golf R tweaks the ESP settings and the torque distribution of the all-wheel drive system, with the torque vectoring system able to send up to 100 per cent of torque to a single wheel if needed.

When putting the drift mode to the test, the YouTuber kicks out the tail around a number of corners and thanks to the all-wheel drive system and torque vectoring, maintaining and controlling the slide should be a breeze. Sure, the driver doesn’t manage to do any wild powerslides as it’s wise to keep such driving to the track or private roads.
The new Golf R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 315 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, an increase of 27 hp and 30 lb-ft (41 Nm) over the previous-gen model. In Europe, this engine is coupled exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch, while customers in the U.S. and Canada receive a six-speed manual transmission as standard.
