The Cybertruck’s design caused a lot of controversy when it was unveiled in November last year. Despite this, Tesla’s first pickup truck was well received by many and hundreds of thousands of people have pre-ordered it.
In the following video, automotive designer Frank Stephenson is sharing his thoughts on the styling of the Cybertruck. Unsurprisingly, he doesn’t like it.
First is the shape. Stephenson compares it to the graphics found on the original PlayStation console and believes that time will not treat the design fondly, as it will date very quickly. He then draws our attention to the Citroen Karin concept that has a similar, sharp-edged design to the Cybertruck and despite being penned back in 1980, actually looks more futuristic than the Tesla.

Stephenson is also critical of the Cybertruck’s interior. He says it feels cold, isolated and anti-environmentalist, which seems rather counter-intuitive for an electric vehicle that is supposed to be much greener than conventional powered ones. He points towards the dent-proof panels and bulletproof glass as signs of an insecure design that has been created to capitalize on a paranoid future where motorists will want to feel protected from nature, rather than feel at one with it.
We think the popularity of the Cybertruck largely comes down to the Tesla and Elon Musk fandom that has shaken up the car industry in recent years. How will we look on the Cybertruck in 20 years? Only time will tell.
