The GMC Hummer EV will launch into an increasingly competitive space of the market, but according to the car manufacturer, it hasn’t relied on benchmarking its electric pickup against its eventual rivals.
During a recent interview with Muscle Cars and Trucks, Hummer EV vehicle performance engineer Todd Hubbard explained that the automaker has simply set out to create the best truck that it could.
“The way we approached it is that it’s more of a clean slate,” he said. “Let’s just set a target, not rely on competitors, and just make the best truck we can make. And we’re going to make it super capable, have all this new tech, and we’re going to do it to the best of our ability… that’s kind of our mentality. To do the best job we can, and make it a super truck.”

Hubbard added that the Hummer EV has all the makings of a superb off-roader, thanks in part to its advanced torque-vectoring e4WD system and air suspension. ICE-powered off-roaders should be worried.
“For suspension travel we have 13 inches, a lot for a stock truck,” he said. “Plus the four wheel steering and 35-inch tires, air suspension with extract mode, and we’re enabling the 37-inch tire… we’re going to enable our dealers to install the tire. It’s not gonna be a package you can buy with the truck, but we’re making it easy for it to happen.”
The powertrain of the flagship GMC Hummer EV will make it a serious threat to other electric pickups, including the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T. Thanks to three potent electric motors, the Hummer EV delivers no less than 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque, allowing it to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just three seconds, meaning it is almost as accelerative as the Chevrolet Corvette.
