2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Shows Panamericana Grille, Active Rear Spoiler And Production Soft Top

Mercedes-AMG has started peeling off some of the camouflage of the new-gen SL, which was recently caught testing near their headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, in two specs.

Our spy photographers claim that the yellow prototype is an SL 63, as it features bigger squared quad exhaust pipes and an adjustable rear spoiler, whereas the red car is understood to be an SL 43.

Both of them feature the production folding soft top, and the SL 63 also has the Panamericana grille with vertical slots, though this is believed to feature across the range.

In terms of power, the new AMG SL, which is based on the same platform as the next-gen AMG GT, sharing some components such as the engines, suspension and 48V architecture, is expected with a range of electrified four-, six- and eight-cylinder powertrains. Although nothing is official, North America might not get the four-pots, and the most affordable SL could arrive with a six-cylinder unit.

The SL 63 should use a twin-turbo V8, which will probably be an upgraded version of the current 4.0-liter mill, making over 610 HP in the ‘S’ version. This won’t be the range-topper of the series, though, as that role will be taken by the rumored SL 73e, with around 800 HP produced by the same internal combustion engine and an electric motor.

Further down the range, we might find the SL 53 and SL 53e, with the latter getting an electric compressor, and the SL 43 that could be the entry-level model.

The all-new SL will reportedly premiere later this year.
