Buy This Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible And Hear 7.5-Liters Of American Muscle Sing

Last month marked the 20th anniversary of GM’s decision to kill Oldsmobile.

While most people don’t have fond memories of the brand’s later models, the same can’t be said about the 442.

Originally introduced as a package, the 442 would go on to become a standalone model in 1968. It was notable for its massive 7.5-liter V8 engine, which produced a claimed 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque.

That brings us to this 1970 442 W-30 Convertible, which will be auctioned by Mecum in March. Just one of 96 produced that year with a four-speed manual transmission and the W-30 performance package, the car stood out back then and continues to do so today.

Dressed in Twilight Blue and featuring contrasting white accents, this is could be the ultimate luxury muscle car. Part of this is due to the W-30 package which added a fiberglass ram air hood, a “low-restriction” air cleaner and an aluminum intake manifold. The engine was also outfitted with upgraded internals including a special camshaft. Thanks to these changes, the output reportedly climbed to 370 hp (276 kW / 375 hp).

Despite being a beast, the 442 is relatively luxurious as it features black bucket seats, metallic accents and acres of faux wood trim. This particular model also has also been equipped with a Custom Sport steering wheel, an eight-track player and a Hurst shifter.

Other notable highlights include front disc brakes and optional Super Stock I wheels wrapped in Goodyear G70-14 Polyglas bias-ply tires. The model also sports a “desirable W-27 aluminum differential cover on the rear axle.”

There’s no auction estimate, but the car is being sold without reserve and will hopefully find a good home.
