McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced in a Tweet today. The young driver is the fourth known F1 since the start of the pandemic.

The team put out a statement indicating that Norris sensed a loss of taste and smell. He informed the team, got tested, and is now self-isolating for 14 days. According to McLaren, he reports no other symptoms and is feeling well.

Norris was in Dubai ahead of a planned training camp. Although the FIA is not imposing its safety guidelines during the off-season, many drivers have spoken out about the need to stay safe during the winter as they prepare for the 2021 season.

That season has already potentially been impacted by the ongoing pandemic. Reports emerged yesterday that the Australian Grand Prix, the first of the season, is set to be rescheduled.

Although Australia’s COVID-19 numbers are relatively low, the UK’s are soaring. Norris along with McLaren and much of the grid, are based in the UK.

Despite the sport’s best efforts, three drivers tested positive for the virus in 2020. Sergio Perez was forced to miss two races in the summer. His teammate Lance Stroll was next. And 2020 champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton missed the second-last race of the season, in the fall.

Despite the rising numbers, part of a second-wave that has long been warned of, Formula 1 insists that it will be able to run a 23-race season. The calendar, first released in November 2020, includes races in Europe, North America, Asia, and the middle-east.

The season 2021 season is set to start in March. We wish Norris a speedy recovery.
