It goes without saying that one should always check the traffic before attempting to make a maneuver – yet, for some reason, many drivers fail to do so. Like, for example, the driver of this Ford Explorer.

This dashcam video was recently shared on Reddit and shows not only who is to blame for the crash, but that it could have easily been avoided had the driver of the Explorer used their mirrors.

The victim was driving for Lyft in his 2005 Toyota Prius at the time and can be seen going down a four-lane road in the U.S. Nothing seems out of the ordinary until the Prius driver starts to approach a large green garbage bin placed on the side of the road. Directly in front of this bin is a white Ford Explorer.

Suddenly, the driver of the Explorer starts to emerge from behind the garbage bin and attempts to do an illegal U-turn, which places him directly into the path of the Toyota. The Prius driver does his best to brake and swerve to the left but he is unable to avoid the Ford and slams into its front-quarter panel.

The cammer says that his Prius was totaled in the crash. There’s no word on how much damage the Explorer sustained, but it might have been substantial.

Not only does this video serve as a reminder of how important it is to use your mirrors and always check for incoming traffic, but it also highlights just how useful a dashcam can be.

Idiot driver (2011 Ford Explorer) totaled my 2005 Prius yesterday while driving for Lyft. Driving all these years with almost 300k miles never a collision. 🙁 from r/IdiotsInCars
