Robert DeNiro and John Boyega are set to star as Formula 1 drivers (former and current, respectively) in a newly announced Netflix film.
The Formula will star Boyega as a young racing phenom from Detroit whose mentor, a former F1 driver played by DeNiro, has mob connections, according to writer-director Gerard McMurray. In the film, Boyega’s character is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left.
“Feels AMAZING to see this idea in my head finally come to life that I’m writing, directing, and producing,” wrote McMurray on Instagram. “My new production company @buppieproductions is teaming up with Tribeca Films & @netflix to bring to you a dope original film coming soon called THE FORMULA starring two of my favorite actors.”

McMurray’s previous work includes Netflix’s Burning Sands, as well as The First Purge and a recent episode of CBS’s rebooted The Twilight Zone. DeNiro also had recent success with Netflix in the not-even-a-little-bit-too-long The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese.
You may recognize Boyega as Finn from the recent Star Wars trilogy as well as Steve McQueen’s anthology film Small Axe and Attack the Block.
This will also by Buppie Productions’ first feature film. According to McMurray, who is the company’s founder, Buppie Productions seeks to produce films for a wide audience featuring well-represented Black characters.
“Buppie Productions develops and produces entertaining stories featuring Black characters for a mainstream film and television audience,” the company writes on its website. “We are the heroes and the villains, the good guys, bad guys, femmes fatales and girls next door.”
An exact release date has not been revealed.
