While Mercedes-AMG models to wear the ‘Black Series’ badge in the past were all about tail-out, drifting antics, the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is much more focused on lap times. Proof, if any was needed, is the fact that it holds the production car lap record around the Nurburgring.

Despite the downforce-oriented nature of the car, Top Gear recently handed the keys to the car over to The Stig and encouraged him to have as much fun as possible. The resulting lap of the Top Gear test track is filled with impressive drifts as the show’s tame racing driver demonstrates that while the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series may have a massive wing at the rear, its downforce can be overcome if you give it enough throttle.

While unconfirmed, it is likely that Top Gear had the GT Black Series on track while filming a segment for the show’s 30th season that’s expected to be released this year. If that’s the case, there’s no doubt that The Stig would have also performed a flying lap.

Will the GT Black Series manage to set a new lap record? Back in season 24, the Mercedes-AMG GT R set a best time of 1:16 on a slightly damp track, so the Black Series will no doubt be faster than that. The current record is a 1:11.3 held by the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, followed by the Ferrari 488 Pista, Dallara Stradale, and Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
