Around 6 PM Friday night, a car traveling southbound on I-93 close to the Zakim Bridge in Boston took flight, subsequently landing on the Leverett Connector Ramp.
A camera captured the entire ordeal, which was rather frightening, showing the car plummeting off the busy bridge. According to Massachusetts State Police, the car hit a guardrail, flipped over, and landed about 25 feet below onto the ramp. Police began an investigation into the incident that night.
The driver was a 19-year-old from Lynnfield, Massachusetts. When the police arrived, he was standing outside of the vehicle, which appears to be a Toyota 86 (or Scion FR-S). While he was reported to be alert and conscious, his injuries were deemed serious enough to be taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. As of Saturday, police still had no information on the cause of the crash, nor any updates on the driver’s condition.

While the picture of the car in the video above is not completely clear, it’s quite obvious that the vehicle was heavily damaged.
Following the incident, traffic on the Leverett Connector Ramp was reduced to just one lane while the vehicle was being removed. This isn’t trivial, given that 2015 statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation estimate about 53,000 vehicles crossed the Zakim Bridge every day, so that lane closure probably had a significant impact on quite a few people’s commute.
Interestingly enough, a similar accident happened about five years ago, in which a pickup truck careened off the Zakim bridge onto a connecting ramp down below. That incident, however, was confirmed to be a result of driving under the influence.
