Volkswagen has started shipping the first units of the ID.4 to global markets as pre-sales begin in Europe and the USA.

Deliveries of the all-electric SUV, which is the brand’s second model based on the MEB platform after the ID.3 hatchback, will begin next month in Europe and China, and from the middle of the year in the United States.

“With the global launch of the ID.3, we will get even more people excited for electric mobility, giving our electric offensive an additional boost”, said Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Sales at VW Passenger Cars. “We hope to deliver over 100,000 ID.4s to customers this year alone. We have already received 17,000 incoming orders for the vehicle.”

Part of Volkswagen’s electric offensive and its ambition to become a global market leader in zero-emission mobility by investing more than €11 billion ($13.2 billion) by 2023, which will help them produce 1.5 million EVs annually by 2025, the ID.4 is made at the Zwickau plant in Germany. Production is also underway at Anting and Foshan in China, and will start at Emden in Germany and at Chattanooga in the United States next year.

Pricing starts at $39,995 for the ID.4 Pro, which uses an 82 kWh battery and has a 250-mile (403-km) EPA estimated range. The model uses a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 201 HP and 228 lb-ft (309 Nm) of torque. The sold-out ID.4 1st Edition has an identical EPA range and was priced from $43,995.
