Turning most vehicles into crossovers / SUVs seems to be the norm these days, and Ford is doing just that with its next generation Fusion, known as the Mondeo on the other side of the Atlantic.
As such, the mid-size car will grow out of its sedan body style into a crossover-like machine, with a slightly sloping roofline behind the B pillars and generous ground clearance. If that sounds something like Subaru’s Outback, which itself, is a rugged version of the Legacy Wagon, you’re absolutely right.
The heavy camo, which includes that big hump at the back, does a very good job at hiding the design details on the latest prototype spied testing in Europe’s frozen north, but we can still spot some cues, such as the new stylish grille with a 3D pattern, slim LED lights, and flush-mounted door handles.

The red brake calipers seen in last month’s scoop were no longer present on this car, and we’d be tempted to presume that it could be a lower grade model. Nonetheless, the sunroof that’s visible in picture #5 dictates otherwise.
Getting closer to the prototype to snap a few interior shots wasn’t possible for our spies, but we already know what the cabin is going to look like, with a gigantic widescreen positioned on the two-layer dashboard. This will likely be split up into three components, for the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system and an entertainment screen for the front passenger. The tiny air vents and a rather big center console, with a rotary dial that’s probably either a rotary shifter or a drive mode selector, were also visible.
Presumably dubbed the Fusion Active, or the Fusion Evos like the 2011 concept in America and possibly Mondeo Active in Europe and other markets, the jacked-up estate will reportedly pack a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain allegedly in the works.
