The 2022 Nissan Frontier was unveiled last week and on first impressions, it appears to be far superior to the outgoing model. However, there is one oddity that has caught the attention of some social media users.
Nissan elected to showcase the 2022 Frontier in the off-road-focused PRO-4X trim that comes complete with a host of orange accents both on the exterior and throughout the cabin. These orange accents continue across the tachometer and speedometer and while there’s no issue with making the outer ring of the speedometer orange, there is an issue with the tachometer.

Ordinarily, analog tachometers feature black font around the edge which turns red for the redline. However, as someone on Reddit/Cars noticed, the Frontier pictured has a red-orange hue from 0 rpm all the way through to 6,000 rpm. Beyond that, there are just the markings on a black (or dark grey) font until 8,000 rpm – and if you look very closely you might discern that, from 6,500 rpm onward, there’s something that looks like it may (or may not) be lighting, probably for when the engine’s running.
Press photos provided by Nissan of the pickup truck and picked up by Reddit show it with the ignition turned on but the engine switched off. There’s a chance that the section of the tachometer from 6,000 rpm (or maybe 6,500 rpm) to 8,000 rpm lights up when the engine is on to ensure drivers can actually see where the redline is, but don’t know for sure.
Whatever the case may be, it seems kind of backwards, and it’s an odd choice for Nissan to make.
