The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Ram 1500 TRX are both powered by insane supercharged V8 engines, and while the Ford is much more track-focused than the Ram, is it actually any quicker in a straight line? The Fast Lane Truck is here to find out.
Driving the Mustang is a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 pumping out 760 hp and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque. By comparison, the Ram 1500 TRX features FCA’s famed Hellcat engine, a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 702 hp and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm). While it has less horsepower than the Mustang, it does have a small torque advantage.

That’s not the biggest advantage the TRX has going for it, though. That would be the fact that it has all-wheel drive whereas the Mustang channels all of its power solely through the rear wheels.
In the first race, the Ram won as the driver of the Mustang struggled for grip and was unable to put all the power to the ground. For the second race, the Mustang driver enabled launch control and while he got a slightly better launch than the first race, it again proved impossible to get the traction required to keep up with the TRX.
The Ram 1500 TRX may be the current king of high-performance pickup trucks, but in the near future Ford will launch its F-150 Raptor R which is rumored to get the same supercharged 5.2-liter V8 as the GT500, although it’s unknown at which state of tune. In any case, a duel with the TRX is inevitable.
