If you’re in the market for a big SUV with seemingly endless amounts of power and luxury, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and Alpina XB7 are two of your best options.

As insane as modern super sedans have become in recent years, we’d argue that SUVs like these are even more remarkable and Throttle House recently had the opportunity to put the duo through their paces in Canada. The review covers all of the important aspects of the vehicles, including their exterior and interior designs, as well as what it is like to drive them.

Powering the GLS 63 4MATIC+ is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that churns out 603 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque. Coupled to this mighty engine is an EQ Boost starter-alternator that adds an extra 22 hp and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) and helps to fill in the torque gaps of the V8. In a straight line, the SUV needs just 4.2 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) and given enough room, it will continue through to 174 mph (280 km/h) with the optional AMG Driver’s package.

By comparison, the Alpina XB7 rocks a slightly larger 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 pumping out 612 hp between 5,500 and 6,600 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm, all of which is sent through the four wheels courtesy of an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It will do 62 mph in a touch over 4 seconds and reach a 180 mph (290 km/h) top speed.

Which of the two is the best? Well, as you would imagine both have their pros and cons, but for the vedrict, you’ll have to head to video right below.
