The people behind the Gymkhana franchise took a risk with the 11th installment, replacing Ken Block with Travis Pastrana and returning to its roots with a Subaru WRX STI. The car featured, however, was far from stock and the two videos below detail what went into creating it.
While it may technically be a WRX STI, it features so many bespoke components that it’s pretty much an entirely new car. In fact, the bodyshell of a 2020 WRX STI is the most obvious element shared with the road car, but even it has been overhauled and is now made from a mixture of Kevlar and carbon fiber and modified to aid in aerodynamics and improve cooling.

The chassis of the Gymkhana car is bespoke and supports a full roll cage. Subaru Motorsport and Vermont SportsCar, the two companies responsible for the build, also went to town on the engine. It displaces 2.3-liters, features a billet block, and also rocks the crankshaft from a Subaru RallyCross car.
Moreover, it features billet heads, a twin timing belt system, a huge turbocharger, and an Inconel exhaust exiting out of the hood. All up, the highly tuned engine churns out 862 hp and is coupled to a six-speed Sadev sequential transmission that powers all four wheels.
In addition to detailing the build process of the car, these clips provide us with a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of Gymkhana 11.
