Hyundai’s TIGER Concept Is A ‘Walking’ Robot Designed To Tackle Tough Terrain

Hyundai has taken the wraps off their TIGER concept, which is being billed as their first “uncrewed ultimate mobility vehicle.”

An acronym for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot, the TIGER was developed by Hyundai’s New Horizons Studio and was designed to carry payloads over challenging terrain.

The concept is based on a modular platform and features a load bay within its body. This enables the TIGER to carry everything from emergency supplies to packages for delivery.

What makes the TIGER interesting is its “sophisticated leg and wheel locomotion system” that allows the concept to rise and ‘walk’ over obstacles while keeping its payload “more level than a typical ground vehicle.”

This feature was previously shown on Hyundai’s Elevate concept which debuted at CES in 2019. However, the TIGER is a small unmanned vehicle whereas the Elevate was not.

The concept features eight 360° ultrasonic sensors, eight camera arrays, GPS and 4G connectivity. There are also two ground penetrating radar panels for exploration.

Hyundai didn’t go into many specifics, but said the TIGER can be outfitted with different bodies for “unique applications such as cargo delivery or surveillance in locations not suitable for humans.” The concept also has all-wheel drive, 360° directional control, and has been designed to connect to an unmanned aerial vehicle that can drop it off in remote locations. Speaking of the latter, Hyundai said the concept could be used to explore the moon or other planets.
