A McLaren 720S Spider was wrecked in California earlier in the week – and it was a rental.
Images of the wreck were posted on Twitter by the California Highway Patrol alongside a since-deleted tweet mocking the crash, although they did incorrectly identify the McLaren as a 570S.
“When you rent a McLaren 570 & decide to race a Lamborghini on the US-101 and crash! Next time you should consider getting the rental insurance! Luckily no one was seriously injured,” the tweet read.

The Lamborghini in question was a black Huracan Spyder that can be seen in one of the photos. While it’s not entirely clear how the crash happened, it was likely a case of the driver of the McLaren simply not being able to control a supercar as powerful as the 720S. After all, its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 churns out a claimed 710 hp, although repeated dyno runs have revealed it actually has more than that.
It seems apparent that the British supercar made contact with the concrete crash barriers multiple times as damage has been sustained to both the front and rear of the car. Much of the damage is concentrated on the rear where one of the wheels, including the hub, has been completely torn from the vehicle.
If the California Highway Patrol was correct with their implication that the renter didn’t pay extra for insurance, that individual could be in dire straits, especially if the car is deemed to be a write-off.
