After a video in which a Tesla employee told a customer that the country’s national electric grid damaged his car began circulating, the company has apologized for the accusation made against China’s State Grid.
According to Caixin, the issue came about after the car’s owner told the local news that his Model 3 wouldn’t start after leaving it to charge at a station. He was later told that the car’s inverter, which changes the battery’s DC electricity to AC, was the source of the problem.

In the video, the Tesla employee apparently blames an overload in the State Grid for the issue. The power company’s division in Nanchang fought back against the accusation, claiming that their grid was running at a stable voltage with no unusual activity to be found. Tesla seemed to shift responsibility off the employee, saying that the video was edited and that the overload was only one of the possibilities mentioned.
China is a very important market for Tesla, and it’s likely they wouldn’t want to upset them. As such, they made an apology video, in which they said, “We are deeply sorry for the misunderstanding and would like to apologize to the Nanchang Power Grid for the inconvenience caused. We have already resolved the problem with the customer and are carrying out tests and investigations on the cause of this failure.”
