Hagerty’s latest series on what to look for when you’re looking for a classic has gotten off to a great start. And now, looking at the Honda S2000, we test the limits of what the show’s title means.
That’s because the best advice you can get is simply to buy one. The S2000’s genius, much like a great artist’s, kind of wasn’t appreciated in its day. Sure, it got accolades, but in many ways, it got taken for granted.
Sold in healthy but not impressive amounts for about a decade, it could easily be forgotten in the 2000s. But in the past few years people seem to be catching on to its real value and prices are only going up. With just about 65,000 sold in the US, they aren’t exactly common either.

One thing to keep in mind is the AP1’s predilection for oversteer. Not a fault, so much as a quirk, the first generation S2000 can easily oversteer with little to no notice, which could get you into trouble – as it did for some of its owners. For the car’s update, its handling became a little more neutral, which some people like better and others don’t.
The real hurdle to overcome for the S2000, though, is simply owners’ love for their cars. There isn’t an enormous amount for sale because you tend not to sell something you love. It may end up being a fine investment, but you might never end up cashing it in. Well, isn’t that just the kind of car you want?
