Ever since the first Ford Raptor came out in 2010, it has led its class as the undisputed king of pickup trucks. However, when Ram introduced the TRX a few months ago, it stole that title, and Ford has yet to catch up. As a result, automotive The Fast Lane wanted to see if even tuned Raptors can equal the mighty TRX, so they put them to the test in a series of drag races.

Lets take a look at the contenders. The first truck is a stock 450 hp (456 PS / 336 kW) 2020 Ford Raptor, the next is a 620 hp (629 PS / 463 kW) tuned 2018 Raptor, and the third is a 700 hp (710 PS / 522 kW) supercharged 2012 model. Of course, we also have the Ram TRX, which makes 702 hp (712 PS / 523 kW), so even in stock form it boasts more horsepower than all three Fords. TFL decides to run the competition with a series of elimination rounds before the final against the Ram. The Raptors race each other in pairs of two to determine the best, then the winner gets to face the TRX.

The first race is the stock 2020 Raptor versus the the tuned 2018 model. Unsurprisingly, the latter wins, as it has an extra 170 hp (172 PS / 127 kW) to play with. Both got off to a pretty good start, but the 2018 model pulls ahead quickly and finishes the race about a car length ahead.

After the 2020 model has been eliminated, the next battle is a little closer in horsepower, and it sees the 2018 vs the 2012 Raptor. However, it’s actually the 2018 that wins, despite being down 80 hp (81 PS / 60 kW) and two extra cylinders. It finishes about two car lengths ahead, and it just goes to show that power figures are not always everything.

The last race sees the 2018 Raptor against the TRX, and it proves to be the closest, even with a difference of about 80 hp. The two trucks are neck and neck for nearly the entirety of the race, but the TRX manages to eek out the win at the last second. At the end of the day, it seems that Ram’s truck just can’t be beat, no matter what you throw at it.

However, in a couple of days, Ford might be coming for the TRX’s throne, as on February 3 they’re releasing the Raptor version of their new 14th-gen F-150. It’s even been rumored to have a variant with the Mustang Shelby GT500’s 760 hp V8, and if that’s the case, it might just be able to take back the crown.
