Back in 2018, manufacturing expert Sandy Munro stripped down an early Tesla Model 3 and compared its fit-and-finish to a Kia from the 1990s. While owners of more recently-produced Teslas have also encountered their fair share of issues, the automaker seems to have turned over a new leaf when it comes to build quality.
To see just far how Tesla has come, Munro recently had the opportunity to sit down with Elon Musk to talk all things related to what Tesla is doing right and what it is doing wrong.

The interview starts out with Munro and Musk discussing the issues that plagued early Model 3s. Musk admits that it proved extraordinarily difficult for the car manufacturer to iron out the kinks in the Model 3 while aggressively ramping up production to meet the demand from its customers. According to Musk, Tesla has continued to refine its production processes and towards the end of 2020, also made improvements to its panel gaps and paint quality.
A handful of other topics are covered throughout the interview. In one segment, Munro praised the comfortable seats of the Tesla Model Y, stating that they are the most comfortable car seats he has ever experienced. Interestingly, Tesla developed and produces its seats in-house whereas most other car manufacturers use seats from outside suppliers. Musk says having the operations in-house has allowed it to refine and perfect the seats over time.
Other topics discussed throughout the video include Tesla’s latest and most innovative iteration of Autopilot, megacastings used by Tesla, and the structural battery packs it is developing.
