2022 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe Facelift: More Tech, Less Controversy Is The Name Of The Game

BMW is still working on the mid-life update of the 2022 8-Series Gran Coupe and our spies spotted yet another partially camouflaged test car.

As we have previously noticed, not every new BMW model is going to get the bucktooth front grille and the facelifted 8-Series is among those models. The update will include new bumpers front and rear, as well as a slight redesign to the existing grille’s surround to make it more pronounced than before. The headlights are also expected to gain a new lighting signature.

Perhaps the biggest upgrade of the 8-Series Gran Coupe’s mid-life update will be found inside, as the test cars so far had their interiors covered, indicating at an upgraded infotainment system with a refreshed interface. The current 8-Series comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system but we expect the larger 12.3-inch system that debuted in the facelifted 5-Series to make its appearance.

BMW offers the 8-Series with a turbocharged 335 HP 3.0-liter straight-six and a twin-turbo 523 HP 4.4-liter V8, in the 840 and M850 models respectively. European customers also get the diesel 840d option as well, which is powered by a mild hybrid 3.0-liter straight-six oil burner with 335 HP. We have no further information at this point but the facelifted 8-Series could follow the footsteps of the latest 5-Series model and introduce more electrified variants.

As for the flagship M8, this will continue using the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, complete with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the clever all-wheel-drive system that can shut down the front driveshafts for those sweet oversteer moments. Just like the latest M5, power is going to be rated at 592 HP for the M8, and at 617 HP for the M8 Competition.

BMW is expected to reveal the facelifted 8-Series in a couple of months as a 2022 model year, with the flagship M8 model to follow soon after.
