There’s little doubt that the Lamborghini Urus is the most striking SUV currently on sale but is it also the quickest in a straight-line?

To answer that question, CarWow brought along a Urus to an empty runway for a series of acceleration tests against one of its rivals, the BMW X6 M Competition. The results are incredibly close and prove just how well-matched these two super SUVs are.

On paper, the Lamborghini Urus has an advantage as its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is rated at 641 hp at 6,000 rpm and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque between 2,250 and 4,500 rpm. Coupled to this V8 is an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission driving all four wheels. By comparison, the X5 M Competition rocks a larger 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 616 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm). It too has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In the first race, the driver of the BMW gets a better launch and while the Lamborghini has a touch more horsepower and torque, it wasn’t able to claw back the X6 M. The second race is better as both nailed their launches and as the two sprint down the runway, they are neck and neck the entire time. However, it was the BMW that won yet again, albeit only by one or two feet.

Then it’s time for the rolling races. With the SUVs left in their automatic modes, the BMW’s transmission responses slightly quicker and helps it secure yet another win. In the final rolling race, however, with both SUVs starting in third gear, the Lamborghini claims victory.
