The successor to the Lamborghini Aventador could be unveiled this year and looks set to feature advanced hybrid technology.

Lamborghini has been making the Aventador for a decade now and while it still offers excellent performance, particularly in limited-edition SVJ guise, it is starting to feel its age. While many details about the Aventador’s successor remain under wraps, the info we do have suggests that it will be quite the performer.

According to reports, power will come from an upgraded version of the company’s 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine, albeit supplemented by a hybrid system very similar to the Sian special-edition. If the new supercar does indeed use the same system as the Sian, that means it will feature a small electric motor that receives its juice from a supercapacitor which is both lighter and more power-dense than a traditional lithium-ion battery and can also charge and discharge power much more quickly.

In the Sian, this unit produces 808 hp, and the new supercar’s output can be expected to be roughly the same. If Lamborghini is to unveil the Aventador’s successor this year, it won’t hit the market until 2022.

Speaking about the future of the Lamborghini brand, chief executive Stephen Winkelmann said he is looking to form a strategy for the brand beyond 2030, when legislation will stipulate what kind of powertrains the brand can use.

“My biggest challenge is to have a clear strategy for what is happening after 2030, to follow up the next generation – not only in terms of product but to have a clear vision of what this means for the brand. The first step is what this means until 2030,” Winkelmann told Autocar. “Without doubt, the legislation part will tell us what we cannot do any more. The door will be very tight and there will be a bottleneck we have to pass.”
