Nissan is still some time away from launching a successor to the R35 GT-R and, if a new report from Japan is to believed, it may update the outgoing model with a mild-hybrid variant.

The Nissan GT-R we all know and love is fitted with a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and according to Best Car Web, the car manufacturer intends on upgrading this engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system featuring an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). It is claimed that this could add 27 hp and, more importantly, 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque.

Not only will this mild-hybrid setup give the Japanese supercar some added power but it will also help to improve fuel efficiency.

It is claimed that the mild-hybrid version of the GT-R will be the swansong to the car, will launch in 2022 and send out the R35 in 2024. Before that happens, however, Nissan may release the last variant of the R35 GT-R without any electrical assistance next year.

This model will apparently be dubbed the GT-R Final Edition and could be upgraded to pump out as much as 710 hp, putting it right up there with the McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8 Tributo. Production of this model could be capped at just 20 units.

Of course, the GT-R isn’t the only exciting performance car from Nissan and will soon be joined by the 400Z, a car that was recently spotted in production form looking just like the Z Proto from last year. It will hit the market with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with around 400 hp and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) and be offered with both a seven-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual.
