With the ID. Buzz set to launch next year, Volkswagen has placed the spotlight on its iconic predecessor, the Bulli, by teaming up with Playmobil to create a scale model with intricate looks.
Inspired by a real 1962 T1 camper from the brand’s Oldtimers collection in Hannover, Germany, nicknamed ‘Henrik the Red’, the toy replicates its design on a 1:18 scale, featuring a two-tone exterior in beige grey and sealing wax red, complemented by the bespoke wheels and roof rack.

Opening the doors reveals an almost identical interior. The Playmobil Bulli has a seat bench that tips up, and table and cupboards that actually work. Additionally, the whole camping experience on a small scale is enhanced by the appropriate food and camping utensils, as well as a map and camera, and two figures.
Recommended for ages 5 to 99, it is 25 cm (9.8 in) long, 11 cm (4.3 in) wide and 13 cm (5.1 in) tall, including the roof rack, and while Volkswagen did not officially say how much it costs, we found it online for just under $70, excluding shipping.
“The fan community’s positive reaction to the Playmobil Bulli can be seen from the many posts on social media. Immediately after it appeared, lots of fan around the globe showed off their new acquisition in photos and videos, and shared their enthusiasm in countless comments”, Volkswagen said, adding that anyone who has “dreamed of going off travelling with their ‘Playmo Bulli’ can also do so in the real world”, as real Bullis can be hired from their Oldtimer division.
