Throughout the years, Porsche has enjoyed huge success in racing, and more than a few remarkable liveries have graced its cars. And now the Macan is celebrating that.
The company recently released four Macans with motorsport-inspired liveries for the Spanish market, and they’re playing the hits.
The coolest, in my extremely subjective opinion, is the 917 Hippie tribute. The swoopy livery may look psychedelic, but it was actually inspired by the wind tunnel. Proposed by the head of Porsche design Anatole Lapine, these were the flow lines that inspired the rounded shape of the 1970 917 that competed at Le Mans. This isn’t just art nouveau, it’s aero nouveau.

The car was sponsored by Martini & Rossi, which is no stranger to great liveries. Porsche had to wait for the alcohol brand to sign off on the design before it could run, which meant that Lapine and his crew actually painted the design at their Le Mans base of operations shortly before the race.
Sticking with the Le Mans liveries, next comes the 919 Tribute Macan. This one honors the brand’s most recent endurance prototype that was powered by a 2.0-liter V4 hybrid drivetrain and earned Porsche a Le Mans hat trick, winning in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Moving from one of its most recent racers to one of its oldest, the 550 Spyder tribute Macan pays homage to the car that came in third at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. It was the surprise hit of the legendary race, and to take its podium spot the car had to average nearly 100 mph (160 km/h) over the 1,900-mile race across Mexico.
An impressive feat in 1954, and one made all the more impressive since it had just 110 hp from a 1.5-liter engine. That’s a third as much power as the winning Ferrari made with a 5.0-liter engine.
And finally, there’s the 924 GTP Tribute. This Macan pays homage to the legendary John Player Special livery. The black and gold livery may be more associated with Lotus’ Formula 1 cars, but it was also worn by the 924 GTP endurance racer that weighed just 930 kg (2,050 lbs) and made 375 hp.
These Macans are powered by a 245 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four and will be sold in Spain at a starting price of 78,500 Euros ($92,000 USD). Along with the liveries, Porsche is throwing in a bunch of standard equipment, like 21-inch wheels, Porsche Active Suspension Management and heated seats, among others.
