On Saturday night, police on the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England, took notice of a Lamborghini Aventador SV. Officers in an unmarked BMW X5 were responsible for pulling over the supercar’s driver, who reportedly got over to the side of the road without a fuss.
It was then discovered that the owner of the +$300,000 Lamborghini (used prices for the Aventador SV range from £200,000 to £350,000 in the UK) had failed to pay road tax since August of last year, so the car was loaded onto the back of a flatbed and seized. According to Yahoo News, in England, vehicles that produce more emissions are taxed higher than those that produce less, and the most expensive rate for those taxes comes in at £2,175 (about US$3,000 at today’s exchange rates) for the first year with every subsequent year costing £150 (around US$210).

However, if the vehicle is worth more than £40,000 (US$55,000), which certainly applies to this six-figure Lamborghini, owners have to pay an extra £325 (US$450) on top of that £150 (US$210) figure. In the case of this incident, it’s estimated that the driver had to pay around £475 (US$660), which is not an insignificant amount of money, but it’s nothing when compared the car’s total value.
The Isle of Wight police department posted the traffic stop on Facebook, where many people in the comments voiced their opinions on it. Some were defending the owner, but most seemed to agree that if you’re able to afford such an expensive vehicle, you should be able to pay the road tax (and on time, for that matter). Hopefully this owner learned his lesson, and he will be able to reclaim his car after paying both the road tax and the impound recovery fee.
