Rivian is planning its charging network and it wants owners to be well-served on the road. The automaker plans to install 3,500 fast-chargers and 10,000 level 2 chargers around the U.S. and Canada.
To ensure that owners of the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV can go anywhere they please, Rivian plans to install two level 2 charging stations at all 42 Colorado State Parks, with construction expected to begin in July.
The slower, level 2 chargers will be known as Rivian Waypoints and won’t just be installed at state parks. The automaker also intends to install 10,000 chargers at shopping centers, restaurants, campsites, parks, and other locations around North America.
The AC chargers will be able to deliver up to 25 miles of range an hour. Rivian is also planning something called its Adventure Network. This will use DC fast chargers that can give the R1T up to 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes.

Rivian is only planning to install 3,500 of these at 600 locations around the US and Canada but along with charging faster, they will be 100% powered by renewable energy. The automaker is partnering with local electricity providers to use wind and solar power for these chargers wherever possible.
Rivian plans to have all 13,500 chargers, fast and otherwise, up and running by the end of 2023. As you might expect, Rivian’s vehicles will come with navigation technology to help you plan your route with these chargers.
The Rivian Adventure Network will be exclusively available to Rivian owners, but they won’t be limited to it. The R1T and R1S are compatible with all CCS networks (used by VW, BMW, GM, and most non-Tesla EVs) and their in-vehicle navigation will be able to plan your route using these charging stations, too.
If your adventures don’t take you very far from home, though, Rivian will also offer a wall charger with WiFi connectivity for over-the-air updates and app compatibility. Suitable for indoor and outdoor uses, it will be capable of 11.5 kW of charging speed. That’s enough to return 25 miles of charge per hour.
