The Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback have returned to the limelight in a new set of spy shots taken in Europe’s frozen north, revealing more of the cockpit design.

The driver sits behind a steering wheel similar to the bigger E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback, staring at a configurable digital instrument cluster, positioned next to the touchscreen infotainment system which is mounted between the central air vents in a layout similar to that of the latest A3.

Further down, we can see the physical buttons for the HVAC system,  which is a nice touch considering that some modern vehicles have started incorporating them into the central display.

The semi-floating center console hosts the drive mode selector, next to the push-button start and another button used to control the audio system. Elsewhere, the prototype features two-tone upholstery that appears to be leather, as well as aluminum trim on the dashboard and door cards.

Both the Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback, the latter being a sportier looking version of the former with a raked roofline, are underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric vehicle platform, shared with the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq iV. They’re expected with several electric powertrain options and different battery sizes, with a single motor driving the rear wheels in the lesser variants. Dual-motor versions with electric all-wheel drive will sit at the other end of the range, and topping them all could be an RS model.

Challenging the likes of the Mercedes-Benz EQB, Tesla Model Y, BMW iX, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Nissan Ariya, the two compact E-Tron SUVs are expected to be shown this year.
