A new prototype of the 2022 BMW M4 Convertible has been spied testing ahead of the car’s long-awaited debut.

Snapped wearing the same shade of Isle of Man Green as the 2021 M3 Sedan was first showcased with, the prototype also lacks the camouflage across its front fascia of previous prototypes our spy photographers have spotted. In fact, the only camouflage is found on the rear fascia of the droptop.

The front of the M4 Convertible looks identical to M4 Coupe and is thus sporting the same bumper and black kidney grilles. Despite the camouflage, it’s reasonable to assume that the rear end will also be identical to the Coupe, albeit except for the inclusion of a third brake light in the trunk lid.

The most obvious alteration made is the inclusion of a folding soft top, as opposed to the folding metal roof that the previous-generation M4 Convertible had. While folding hardtops are preferred by some, they add more weight and impact handling. In fact, the old M4 Convertible weighed roughly 550 lbs (250 kg) more than the Coupe.

Like its hardtop sibling, the new BMW M4 Convertible will be offered in standard and Competition guises. As such, the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six will produce 473 hp in the base variant and 503 hp in the Competition model. Both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options will be offered, as will manual and automatic transmissions.

Reports claim that production of the M4 Convertible will start in July 2021 meaning it should be unveiled in the coming weeks.
