Cupra’s first electric model is on its way and appears to be close enough to production to be testing with what our spies believe to be journalists behind the wheel.
A few shots of passengers with cameras suggest that these aren’t all internal test drivers. So keep an eye out for some pre-production reviews soon. And they should prove interesting.
Based on the Volkswagen ID.3 and built in the same factory in Zwickau, what’s bred in the Born is lots of battery power. With 77 kWh of battery available to you, the Born makes use of the same battery as the highest-spec ID.3 Pro S.

Cupra, consequently, promises that it will be good for up to 500 km (310 miles) of range. The bigger batteries will also power 201 hp-worth of electric motors. Along with a Dynamic Chassis Control system you may recognize from the Golf GTI, the Born is expected to be something of a performer.
The brand has only shared the car’s 0-31 mph times so far, but it says it should be able make the run in 2.9 seconds. That’s not mind-blowing, but it should still feel pretty brisk since the Mk7 GTI goes from 0-30 in 3.1 seconds, per Edmunds.
The first in a range of EVs for Cupra, the Born will precede a small electric crossover. Based on the tiny MEB-Lite platform, the crossover is expected to be pretty small. But, as a result, it will also be very reasonably priced.
Production of the Born will enter production in the second half of the year. When sales start, customers will be able to buy it the traditional way or via a monthly subscription.
