Volkswagen is thinking about creating a convertible version of the ID.3 hatch.
The German car manufacturer has its hands full at the moment readying a plethora of ID-branded electric vehicles but its designers have found some spare time to sketch out an ID.3 Convertible.
Images of the car were shared on social media by both Volkswagen Group chief executive Herbert Diess and chief executive officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Ralf Brandstätter.

In a LinkedIn post, Brandstätter wrote, “An ID.3 convertible? Sounds quite appealing: enjoying nature with the top down, with the instant, but silent electric punch. This could provide an entirely new, extraordinary feeling of freedom. I admit: a very tempting idea. We are still pondering how to turn this attractive concept into reality. Just in case, our design team has already sketched out some initial ideas.”
The front fascia of the ID.3 Convertible presented in these sketches looks largely unchanged from the hatchback. However, the car now features a steeply raked windshield and is now only a two-door. Changes have also been made to the rear-end with unique taillights. Despite only being a two-door, the car still has four seats, although those at the rear are probably quite cramped.
The only convertible currently being produced by Volkswagen is the T-Roc Cabriolet. Creating a new droptop with its MEB architecture would allow the carmaker to save on development and manufacturing costs compared to creating a combustion-powered convertible.
