Automakers of all types are going green and that even includes Matchbox.
As part of their Drive Toward A Better Future initiative, all Matchbox die-cast cars, playsets and packaging will use 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic by 2030.
To highlight the change, the company has unveiled a Tesla Roadster which is their first die-cast vehicle made from 99% recycled materials and certified CarbonNeutral. The model is slated to be launched in 2022 and could beat the actual Roadster to market.

The changes don’t stop there as the company is adopting an “eco-friendly themed approach to play.” This will see Matchbox produce more die-cast models of electric vehicles and add EV chargers to their gas station playsets.
The toy maker is also promising “more environmentally friendly and innovative materials across vehicles, playsets and packaging” as well as “enhanced consumer recycling through product design and packaging labeling.”
As part of these efforts, Matchbox cars will come in zero-plastic packaging which uses Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper and wood fiber materials. In particular, an EV-themed five-pack is now available it uses a paper foam inner tray.
While it’s hard to get excited about a paper tray, the set apparently includes a BMW i3 and i8 as well as a Nissan Leaf and a Toyota Prius taxi. We can also see a Matchbox-branded van of some sort.
Last but not least, Matchbox will consolidate electronics in their products into a “single, easily removable module to help make the local e-waste recycling process easier.”
