Drivers of the new 500 have a novel tool to optimize their EV’s range as Fiat has equipped it with a function familiar to smartphone users: a power saving mode.
The innovative feature automatically kicks in when car’s autonomy drops to around 30 miles (48 km), and cuts down the power, while also limiting top speed to 50 mph (80 km/h).
To better preserve energy, the power saving mode of the Italian electric supermini encourages the use of one-pedal driving, which helps save up to 30 percent more energy compared to conventional braking. The software also deactivates the climate control, heated seats, windscreen and mirrors.

To override it, drivers will have to firmly press on the throttle or simply select a different mode, such as Normal or Range, using the switch on the center console. In Normal, the new 500 acts as a regular car, while Range optimizes, well, range, albeit without limiting the top speed.
Should they be close to running out of juice, drivers will have to plug it in for only 5 minutes to get an extra 30 miles (48 km) of range, while an 80 percent charge can be achieved in 35 minutes when using a fast charger. Overall, the car can travel for a maximum of 199 miles (320 km) combined on the WLTP cycle, and up to 248 miles (399 km) in the city.
“This power saving mode will hopefully add an extra layer of comfort to a consumer who might be looking to buy their first electric car”, said Fiat’s Country Manager, Greg Taylor. “In addition, being able to get 30 miles of charge in just five minutes means drivers won’t be waiting long when they do need to charge.”
