With Ford’s promise to go all-electric in Europe by 2030, it will need to introduce a lot of EVs in a a relatively short period of time. Reports suggest that it may return to Volkswagen for help with that.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Ford is close to reaching a final decision on the prospect of introducing a second vehicle on the MEB electric platform. The talks could lead to an agreement in the coming weeks.
“As we have said previously, there is the potential for a second all-electric vehicle based on the platform to be built in Cologne, and that is still under consideration,” Ford said in a statement.

Volkswagen has already licensed its electric-only vehicle platform to Ford for a vehicle that it is currently in the process of developing. Recently we saw the first spy pictures of the crossover, which will share nothing in common with the Mustang Mach-E.
Due to using the MEB platform, it will have a different ride height and wheelbase than Ford’s current electric crossover. It also features a unique, boxy design, as those spy pictures revealed.
Production, as Ford’s statement implied, will happen at its Cologne plant in Germany. The company has said that it is investing $1 billion in the plant to transform it into the Ford Cologne Electrification Center.
Ford’s use of Volkswagen’s MEB platform comes as a result of a deal struck between the two automakers. The terms of the deal also mean that Volkswagen will use Ford’s van and small pickup platforms for its own upcoming vehicles.
