Ford has been teasing the electric F-150 for months and a new report suggests it will be called the F-150 Lightning.
While the name is closely associated with performance versions of the pickup, a document obtained by Car & Driver revealed it will be used on the electric F-150. However, Ford declined to confirm the news as they told the publication “We don’t comment on speculation about future products.”
Regardless, the Lightning name would be a good fit for the electric F-150 as it implies electricity, power and nature. It’s also worth mentioning that Ford could have alluded to the name as their Mustang Mach-E vs Everything campaign included a Mustang Mach-E vs Lightning video, which said “The ability to generate lightning is within our capabilities.” While the clip was referring to Tesla coils, it would be a heck of a coincidence if it wasn’t planned.

Putting that aside, the electric pickup will build on the Lightning’s legacy of performance as Ford has confirmed the model will have a dual motor powertrain that produces “more horsepower and torque than any F-150 available today.” At the time, the most powerful F-150 was the Raptor which had a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 developing 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS) and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) of torque. That means the EV will improve upon those numbers and Ford has also said the truck will offer the “fastest acceleration” as well as the “ability to tow heavy trailers.”
While specifics are lacking, the electric F-150 will be built in Michigan starting in mid-2022.
